Thanks Dawn, Sharon, Mother Nature, and Byron. Yes it is Stink Bug!

These look a bit like 'wheel bugs', aka 'assassin bugs', which have a structure on their backs resembling an arc of a toothed wheel or gear and can deliver a nasty wound with their proboscis. v

My sister-in-law in Florida had informed me that this is Shield Bug. And bad for gardens. So hopefully the mystery is solved, I am going to look up Shield bugs now!

Great shot! I found one very similar, but mine has a longer head and round bumpy protrusion behind the head. Maybe it is in the same family of insects. You can look at mine near the bottom of the first page in my all critters gallery. v.f

Artist's Description

I could not enter much for keywords because I do not know what this is! It is an extremely aggressive creature with a body about an inch long not including legs or feelers. It makes a loud noise when agitated which is how I found it because my dog was trying to smell it. It is quite feisty. Has a sort of grasshopper body, but would appreciate an identity if anyone has one. Here it perches on our canoe which gave it such wonderful contrast. It has been identified as a Shield Bug! There are many varieties. Thanks for defining!

About Judy Via-Wolff

Judy Via-Wolff

I have a great love for nature and all God's creation. In any artworks or photos I create, I try to reflect a moment of fleeting beauty as all things are but for an instant. I love to paint and use pastels. I paint in oils, acylics, and water colors depending on the piece. I also pursue the medieval technique of egg tempera painting.I also have begun digital painting which I create from scratch with a stylus. Photography also provides an instant in time. Judy has a BFA and a Masters Degree From RIT"S School for American Craftsman and Fine art. She spent many years as a glass artist and was able to reflect the light and colors of God's creation through this medium. She won many awards over the years and enjoyed creating new works...
