Description
This little darling is a baby cowbird just out of the nest. So adorable however certainly wondering where he fits in. Cowbirds are large and when grown are black with brown heads. You probably have seen them in your yard. The females are not "the Motherly type"! They drop their eggs in the nests of all species of birds, sometimes removing the eggs of the bird whose nest they choose and sometimes just adding their egg to the others in the nest. They then take off to live a carefree life while the mother bird (which can be a sparrow, cardinal, finch, jay, blackbird, robin, cardinal and on and on)...sits on the nest not noticing the egg and raises the baby cowbird as her own. Once in a while if a bird notices the egg she will abandon her nest and not hatch her eggs. Most often it is raised and leaves the nest with the other fledglings as this one has done on this day. They then have to learn to fend for themselves and at some point will join up with a flock of cowbirds and continue this cycle. They are truly adopted children. Ah what a sweet little baby, Judy! I love how you have captured him perched so endearingly on the light post. What a most amazing description you have written. I had no idea! Well, I am sure there are lots of human mothers who would like to pawn their kids off once in a while too! L
