Description
I have wanted to post this for a long time. It hangs in the home of a very close spiritual friend and teacher. Before that, it hung for several years in St. John the Evangelist Church. This was an inspired work like a vision that came to me. My husband had traveled to Petra, Jordon. I followed his trip by internet and was intrigued by this place and researched the history. At the time I was caring for my Mom and going to a bible study in an interesting small round room circled by long narrow stained glass windows attached to a church. While I was sitting there at the table this vision struck me related to the Petra caves. I saw the same configuration in which we were sitting and the table and I saw the cave and the light in the darkness. All symbolic.
I did the initial sketch at that moment. About 20 to 30 years ago Papyrus bound biblical scripture was found in a cave in Petra. These were some of the first discoveries of scripture that was not in scroll form. At one point in the vast and amazing history of Petra, Christians hid there and celebrated Mass and scribed by hand these books. Mystics and Monks hid and prayed together. They were hiding from persecution of early Christians. They probably werent there for long as many groups occupied and overtook Petra which is now a Muslim territory.
My vision was one of seeing the table hewn from the rock (as are many alters in churches). The cross is a hole in the rock through which shines the light. That is from a photo I took in Italy of a ruined wall with a cross that the sunlight was streaming through. The figures are people I know. The front figure whose back is to you is me. The hands are my Mothers as I photographed them for the painting. My husband was kind enough to let me throw a tablecloth over him in order to get some photos for the hooded robes. The faces can not be identified because they are meant to be anyone and everyone who follows the path of Christ. The main idea of this painting is that today those who follow the Way would not be able to if it were not for those who have protected and even lost their lives in order to preserve and pass on and share the secret of the sweetness of the sacrifice of Christ and the wisdom and connection of the early scriptures of the Old and New testament. Please enjoy, this image is copyrighted and can not be copied or used in any way without my permission. Prints are available for sale on FAA. This was painted in 2005. If you are so inspired read some of the writings of the ancient monastic mystic St. John of the Cross. I found some of his writings to be very symbolic and relate to this image.

Thanks Oliver, what took me so long was that I was hoping to go and re photograph this, instead I scanned a photo I took of the painting when I used a film camera. Yes vision does come sparingly, ( so does time to paint for me!). I'm glad you can "feel the spirits"...

Judy!! What took you so long to post this. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story and painting. This looks ancient and full of light. Immaculate!!. Can feel the spirits move in harmony. I like the portrayal of yourself. You should paint more of your visions and share. Than again, vision comes sparingly.
