Description
Many people have asked me about my blown glass business that I had for 25 years. I decided to post this "advertisement" that I made in photoshop years ago. It was happily collected by my "buyers". I was also twice asked to make glass art for the whitehouse Blue Room Christmas tree and had a private tour! I used to sell to retail galleries and shops all over the US and abroad. This a sampling of some of my signature items. I gave up time in my studio to take care of my Mom who passed 4 and a half years ago and I considered that a privledge and much higher calling. A hot glass studio takes all of your time and energy and is extremely expensive to operate and maintain. The glass furnace runs at 2200 degress farenheit 24 hours a day and you have many annealing ovens etc. that are all electric. As the artist you have to design, create, grind, finish, display, ship, package, truck, travel, pay help, market, deliver and educate. You wear many hats! I came to the point where I felt I had really lived out my creativity and needed a rest from being "owned by my studio". With glass you must sell to pay the abominable expenses. I used to pay 800.00 dollars a month electric bills! I did sell everything I made and also did many sculptural works which were in many shows. I still have glass works available in boxes in storage however i have not had time to market them. I used to do anywhere from 12 to 24 art shows a year plus the wholesale shows. Lots of travel! I enjoyed it and felt that God gave me the special gift. My husband was my constant helper also and he also learned to blow glass. When I sold the studio it was a great relief beyond words. I felt free in a big way. Now I could rest, after losing my Mom, concentrate on teaching, and just be. I paint for pleasure and am only just beginning to tap into that. No large equipment necessary, that alone is novel! I did however want to share this photograph of one of my advertisements with you so you could see some pieces. You can still find my glass fish in the Cedar Chest on Sanibel Island in Florida which is owned by my cousin. She uses them in her displays. Moral of the story: I never want to be defined by what I did or made as an occupation or passion, I hope when I'm gone to be remebered for things of a higher calling...

Thank you Phyllis, You can always try other things in glass that are less hard on the body like fusing etc. that is part of why I gave it up, very hard on your back and spine. I'm glad you enjoy my former artwork!

I love your glass, your ad and your wonderful story. I am charmed. This is delightful ad and your glass is beautiful! It is something I have always wanted to try but never have. At 77 years of age, i think I will just enjoy what I have seen others do. Though I have minimal talent, I still enjoy painting and I love painting Cats and other wonderful animals! Thank you for sharing your wonderful glass! ;-)
