Painting - Egg Tempera Painting
Description
This is another one of my egg tempera paintings. The process is a medieval technique that requires hours of patience. Tiny multi zero brushes are used on board that is gessoed in the ancient technique seven times and ground flat with a wooden block. Each layer of paint is applied in thin, thin glazes and layered at least seven times. This creates a jewel tone effect that shows layers of colors and tiny brush strokes. Gold leaf is applied on the domes. Icon painting is still often done in this technique. I enjoy painting seabirds in this technique but once in a while I paint a medieval scene. Because of my Italian heritage and my love for Italy, I choose this image.

Thanks RW, these egg tempera paintings are a long process, however they are worth the tedious technique in the end!

Thank you Steve, Digital is the new frontier! However for me I still love getting my hands into what I'm doing and getting paint all over me! lol, I also love phtotgraphy, so many ways to make art!

Love this, Judy! Understated and yet powerful! A feel of the finely woven tapestries of the period! V + F + W (and I agree. I so much more enjoy the Oil and Watercolors. All too expensive for me right now however, so digital is where I do my work. You have inspired me to once more take up the brush and palette!)

I love this image. It has a lot of detail, great colors, with someone of a folk art kind of appeal. Beautiful job. v/f

Thanks Fred, It was an attempt to try to paint in a medieval style. I am almost done with another egg tempera of a seabird. Maybe another month before I finsish it.
